A scrapbook created by John McCracken Horner documenting his time as a Penn State student and the years directly following his graduation and before he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in France in early 1918. The scrapbook includes photographs of buildings around campus, such as Old Main, the Agriculture Building, the Ladies' Cottage, New Beaver Field, and the open air theatre. It also includes photographs of several student activities, such as class scraps (Cider Scrap, Push-ball Scrap, and Tug-of-war), the football and wrestling teams, football victory bonfires, military drills both at Penn State and at Fort Ticonderoga in New York, and a Penn State Commencement. The scrapbook also includes several newspaper clippings, from both the Penn State Collegian and The Times of State College, about the wrestling team, of which he was a member and manager. There are also photographs of Penn State President Edwin E. Sparks. There are other miscellaneous items, such as dance cards, banquet cards, name cards, signatures, college songs, receipts, and house plans for Alpha Zeta. Photographs of vacations at Lake Champlain and Lake George document the years after he left Penn State and newspaper clippings about Horner's going to France to work in the U.S. Army Motor Corps and American Red Cross document his military years. Several Christmas greeting cards and family photographs complete the scrapbook.
